Broader protections

Overall, the recovery plan sets forth many crucial points, goals, and actions, but it does not receive adequate funding to tackle each of these areas. For some species, captive breeding programs can increase population size and stability. But for jaguars, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has deemed captive breeding programs not eligible. This is because jaguars have a very specific range historically inside of the U.S., and the FWS does not believe that captive breeding programs would be helpful at this time. But other things could still be done for the jaguar.

Getting involved in nonprofits to protect wildlife and habitat is an important step that everyone can support. Click here to see how you can get involved and make a difference right now! Another step that could immensely help jaguars is putting together a team of people who could act as an anti-poaching task force, much like is being done is Africa for protecting elephants. This would likely take place in Mexico, but support from U.S. government would be invaluable in creating and maintaining a program such as this one. There are also many steps for individuals to get involved and make a positive difference!
